Mother and Baby on film

We don't need to remind you of the growing appreciation for the organic, timeless qualities of film as more photographers are returning to analogue cameras for lifestyle sessions. There is a depth and nostalgia to film that digital simply struggles to replicate. Many photographers are offering packages which are based on film alone or as a complement to digital frames.
In this recent session Fremantle based photographer Joia @studio_ellery shot with a Canon AE-1 paired with Kodak Portra 400 to document the tender bond between mother and her baby.
For Joia the image qualities are just what she wants as deliverables with the film speed suitable for hand shooting in a variety of lighting conditions.
If you search Portra on the web it sums up the film's qualities as;
- Flattering Skin Tones: Portra’s low-contrast palette naturally smooths out skin imperfections and beautifully balances the delicate, easily flushed skin of a newborn against a mother's warmth.
- Luminous Light: detail into the shadows, creating an airy, glowing look perfect for a bright nursery or window light.
- Crisp Textures: The ultra-fine grain preserves the sharp, organic details—like fine baby hair and soft knitted blankets—without losing the unmistakable texture of film.

While Portra 400 has a great following for its color, its rich tonal depth means the frames convert beautifully into digital black and whites that mirror the look of classic monochrome film. One camera body and a few rolls of colour film simplifies the shoot so you can focus on capturing the special moments.
